Backsplashes can be so fun! and there are so many different tiles to use! But how do you know which tile is right for you? You may be hiring a professional to do your backsplash, or maybe you’re taking on the challenge yourself. Either way, it’s good to know what you’re getting into.
Mosaic Tile
Mosaic tiles are absolutely gorgeous. There are a million different pattern, colour and size combinations to choose from, and they are typically very easy to install.
What is a mosaic tile? A mosaic tile is a collection of detailed and unique tiles that are mounted onto a mesh, or sometimes paper, backing. The mesh allows the tiles to be installed in large pieces, keeping your pattern uniform. The sheets typically come in 12″x12″ sizes but can be smaller or longer depending on the tiles

Mosaic tiles often give a room an added level of pizzazz. Even though most tiles have simple designs, when the tiles are small, numerous, and arranged in intricate patterns, they can be breathtaking.

Subway Tile
Subway tile is a timeless classic, but that doesn’t mean that there is no creative freedom. A subway tile is a thick, glazed ceramic tile, typically 3″x6″, though it is still a subway tile if it is a different but similar size. So by that definition, you are not at all limited. You can experiment with colour, glaze, grout, and edge finish. Take the following tiles for instance. There is no doubt that they are Subway, but they don’t conform to the traditional look.

You also have the freedom to lay your subway tile in many different patterns. The most common layout for subway tiles is brick bond, but any of these would turn out wonderfully. The way you lay your tile should be complimentary to your space. Placing your tiles in any vertical pattern makes your walls look taller, much like wainscoting makes your walls look taller.

So what’s the main idea?
#1 Mosaics are small, detailed, and uniform, so they can pack a super artistic punch.
#2 You shouldn’t feel limited by Subway Tiles timeless nature.
#3 There is no one tile that is better than the other.
#4 The right style decision is your style decision.
